About the Aarti

What is an Aarti?

A devotional song sung while a lit lamp (or a flame of camphor) is offered and circled before a deity's image, usually as the closing act of a puja.

Why a lamp?

Circling a flame before the deity while singing is the ritual gesture the word "aarti" itself refers to — offering light in devotion. The song and the gesture happen together, not separately.

Aarti, Chalisa, or Mantra?

An aarti is shorter and sung with a lamp, usually at the close of worship. A chalisa is a longer, structured hymn recited on its own. A mantra is a short, often single-line, sacred formula repeated in japa. The three are related but distinct forms.
