Overview
Jai Ambe Gauri is a Hindi aarti of eleven stanzas in praise of Durga, addressed to her as Ambe (Mother) and Gauri (the fair one). Each stanza is followed by its own opening line as a refrain, so the invocation “Jai Ambe Gauri, maiya jai Shyama Gauri” recurs throughout the song exactly as it is sung and printed in devotional collections. It is a widely sung aarti in North Indian Shakta practice, heard nightly during Navratri and at the close of Durga Puja worship across the year.
Origin and source
Jai Ambe Gauri is traditionally attributed to Pandit Shraddha Ram Phillauri, a 19th-century Hindi and Punjabi poet-composer. The stanzas describe Durga’s iconography — her lion mount, sword and skull-bowl, four arms, and radiant form — and recount episodes from the Devi Mahatmyam, the Puranic text at the heart of Shakta worship: her defeat of the demons Mahishasura, Dhumralochana, Chanda and Munda, Raktabija, and Shumbha and Nishumbha, as well as Madhu and Kaitabha. Other stanzas identify her with Brahmani, Rudrani, and Kamala (Lakshmi), and as the consort of Shiva, reflecting the Shakta view of Durga as the single Goddess underlying all forms of the divine feminine.
How it is recited
Jai Ambe Gauri is sung daily by many Durga devotees, typically at home in front of a lit lamp or during a temple aarti, and it is a fixture of Navratri, when it is often sung every evening for all nine nights alongside Durga Puja or Chandi Path recitation. It is also closely associated with Friday, the day of the week traditionally linked to the Goddess in North Indian practice. As with most aartis, it is usually sung while a lit diya or camphor flame is circled before the deity’s image, with the refrain repeated by everyone present after each stanza.
