Overview

Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is a Hindi aarti of eight stanzas in praise of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and well-being. Its opening line — “Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, Maiya Jai Lakshmi Mata” — is one of the most widely recognized invocations in Hindu devotional life, and that same line returns as a short refrain after each of the later stanzas. It is sung in homes and temples across the year, and above all during Diwali, when Lakshmi puja is performed in almost every Hindu household.

Origin and source

Om Jai Lakshmi Mata shares its opening line, meter, and refrain structure with Om Jai Jagdish Hare, a Hindi aarti to Vishnu reliably dated to around 1870 and attributed to Pandit Shraddha Ram Phillauri, a 19th-century Hindi and Punjabi poet-composer. Some devotional sources extend that same attribution to Om Jai Lakshmi Mata itself, describing it as part of the same family of “Om Jai … Mata/Hare” aartis Phillauri composed — a family that also includes Jai Ambe Gauri — but this specific attribution is less consistently documented than it is for Om Jai Jagdish Hare, so it is presented here as a common devotional tradition rather than settled history. The stanzas address Lakshmi through a series of associations rather than a single narrative: she is identified with Uma, Rama (an epithet of Lakshmi herself), and Brahmani; described as a form of Durga; and said to dwell in Patala, the netherworld. Later stanzas connect her to the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) — she is called “born of the ocean of milk” and linked to the fourteen treasures the Puranas describe as arising from that churning — and to the everyday necessities of life: food, clothing, and the ability to perform a yajna (ritual sacrifice) at all. The final stanza turns to the aarti itself, promising that whoever sings it in devotion finds joy and relief from sin, a closing pattern shared with many aartis in this form.

How it is recited

Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is sung throughout the year, typically before a lit diya or lamp placed near an image of the goddess, with the audience joining in on the refrain “Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, Maiya Jai Lakshmi Mata” after each stanza. It is central to Diwali, when it accompanies the main Lakshmi puja performed in homes and businesses, and it is also commonly sung on Fridays, the day of the week traditionally associated with Lakshmi in North Indian practice. As with other aartis in this form, a lit flame is circled before the deity’s image while the aarti is sung, and the flame is then passed among those present.
