Overview
Hari Om Shri Shakambhar Amba Ji Ki is a short Hindi aarti, five stanzas long, addressed to Shakambhari, a form of the Devi described in the Devi Mahatmyam as the sustainer of vegetation, grain, and green life. The aarti calls her by two names drawn from that tradition — Shakambhari, “the one who bears vegetables,” and Shatakshi, “the hundred-eyed one” — and asks her, in refrain after refrain, to accept the devotee’s worship. It also names her Adi Bhavani, the primordial form of the Goddess, tying this specific, harvest-linked form of Devi to the broader Shakta understanding of a single Devi underlying every one of her forms.
Origin and source
The names Shakambhari and Shatakshi both come from the Devi Mahatmyam, part of the Markandeya Purana, which is also the source for Durga’s own defeat of Mahishasura. In that telling, the Goddess takes the form of Shakambhari to end a hundred-year drought and famine, sustaining every being from vegetables and fruit grown from her own body; the epithet Shatakshi, “hundred-eyed,” is tied by tradition to the hundred eyes she is said to have wept in compassion for the suffering during that famine. This aarti itself does not retell that story — it addresses Shakambhari and Shatakshi directly, by name, as an act of devotion, rather than narrating her origin.
No composer or printed source is attributed to this aarti in the Hindi devotional collections where it circulates today; it is a widely known, anonymous composition rather than scripture in its own right, in the same way that many of the aartis sung in Hindu homes and temples are.
How it is recited
This aarti is sung especially around Shakambhari Purnima, also called Shakambhari Jayanti, the day held to mark the Goddess’s incarnation as Shakambhari to end the great famine. Purnima closes Shakambhari Navratri, the nine days of worship devoted to this form of the Devi that begin on Pausha Shukla Ashtami — also called Banada Ashtami — and run to the following full moon. As with other aartis, it is traditionally sung with a lit diya or camphor flame circled before the deity’s image, the refrain “Shri Shakambhar Amba ji ki aarti kijo” carried by everyone present after each stanza.
