Overview

The Bajrang Baan (श्री बजरंग बाण, “Hanuman’s arrow”) is a Hanuman stotra recited for protection — not a chalisa in the strict sense of forty measured verses, despite being grouped with the chalisas here for cataloguing. Its structure is its own: an opening doha asking for Hanuman’s grace, a body of chaupai-like couplets that recall his deeds from the Ramayana while invoking him directly through a run of bija (seed) mantras, and a closing phala shruti describing the protection said to come from reciting it, framed by a final doha. Where the Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn of daily praise, the Bajrang Baan is usually reached for with a more specific, urgent intent — warding off fear, hostility, or malevolent influence, as its name (baan, “arrow”) suggests.

Origin and source

Like the Hanuman Chalisa, the Bajrang Baan is traditionally attributed to Tulsidas and composed in Awadhi, the same literary Hindi dialect as the Ramcharitmanas — the closing line of the text itself names him as its author. Unlike the Chalisa, though, its text is not fully standardized: devotional collections and printed gutkas circulate more than one version, differing in a handful of couplets, their wording, and their order. The text given here follows the shorter sequence that is corroborated word for word across independent Hindi devotional sources, rather than a longer variant that some print editions carry with a couple of additional couplets inserted into the middle.

How it is recited

The Bajrang Baan is most often recited together with the Hanuman Chalisa, either right after it or in its own separate sitting, and it shares the Chalisa’s association with Tuesday and Saturday, the two days most closely linked to Hanuman worship. Devotees tend to reach for it at times of fear, obstruction, or hostility in particular, though a single daily recitation alongside the Chalisa is the more common, everyday practice. Some devotees repeat it a set number of times — eleven is common — in one sitting, especially when reciting it for a specific difficulty rather than as part of a daily routine.
