Overview

The Vishwakarma Chalisa is a Hindi devotional composition of forty chaupai couplets, framed by an opening and closing doha, addressed to Vishwakarma, the divine architect and craftsman of Hindu tradition. It is a distinct text from Shri Vishwakarma Aarti: where the aarti recounts a handful of Puranic episodes (Vishwakarma instructing Brahma, sage Angira’s austerities, an ailing king’s relief, a chariot-maker couple’s prayer) inside a short eight-stanza song sung with a lit lamp, the chalisa is a longer catalogue-style hymn describing Vishwakarma’s genealogy, his form and emblems, the divine weapons and vehicles he is said to have fashioned for other gods, and the fruits of reciting his name — the standard structure and length of the wider “chalisa” genre.

Origin and source

Like most Hindi chalisas, the Vishwakarma Chalisa circulates without a securely documented author, date, or textual history, and this page does not assert one. The verses themselves describe Vishwakarma as the eighth of the Vasus and son of Prabhasa — a genealogy found in Puranic tradition — and credit him with fashioning the emblem-weapons carried by other deities: the discus for Vishnu, the trident for Shiva, the water-pot for Brahma, the thunderbolt for Indra, the noose for Varuna, and the staff for Yama. One chaupai (35) states that “between Shiva and Vishwakarma the wise see no difference,” a Shaiva framing of Vishwakarma consistent with the chalisa’s own closing doha, which addresses him directly as “Vishwakarma in Shiva’s own form.” The text also names Manu, Maya, Tvashta, and Taksha as fellow craftsmen under Vishwakarma’s protection, and refers to his “five sons,” a detail found in some regional traditions that identify five constituent lineages or gotras descended from Vishwakarma.

How it is recited

The Vishwakarma Chalisa is recited by artisans, engineers, and machine operators, especially around Vishwakarma Puja, observed on 17 September (Kanya Sankranti) in much of North and East India. On this day, workshops, factories, and offices clean and worship their tools and machinery, and many devotees read or recite the chalisa as part of that puja, seeking Vishwakarma’s blessing over their craft and equipment for the year ahead. The chalisa’s own closing chaupais describe the customary practice of reciting his name one hundred and eight times, and reading the chalisa itself, to seek relief from difficulty and to invite his grace.
