Overview

The Kuber Chalisa is a Hindi devotional composition addressed to Kubera (Kuber), the treasurer of the gods, guardian of the north, and king of the yakshas. Framed by two opening and two closing dohas around a body of chaupai couplets, it praises Kuber’s mythological origins and regal court before turning, verse after verse, to concrete petitions — relief from debt, the resolution of stalled work, protection from illness and enemies, and the growth of a household’s or a business’s fortunes. That practical, petitionary character is typical of the chalisa genre, which across many deities functions less as philosophical reflection and more as a devotee’s itemized appeal recited for specific worldly aims.

Origin and source

This Chalisa does not name a composer within its own verses, and the site is not aware of a secure historical attribution for it comparable to the Hanuman Chalisa’s attribution to Tulsidas. One Hindi outlet’s transcription is captioned “Kuber Chalisa lyrics by Gulshan Kumar,” a credit that likely reflects a widely distributed T-Series-era devotional audio recording rather than original literary authorship. The text itself is, in practice, remarkably uniform: independent Hindi devotional and news sites transcribe the same forty-four chaupai couplets in the same order and wording, though one independently transcribed rendering diverges in spelling and closes with a different final signature line, naming “Krishnadatta” rather than the “Manas Parivar” phrase used in the more common version presented here — a sign that more than one transcription lineage of this composition circulates, even where the substance agrees.

The verses recount Kuber’s place in Puranic genealogy — great-grandson of Brahma through the sage Pulastya, son of Vishrava and Idavida, and brother of Ramayana’s devotee-prince Vibhishana — along with the austerity by which he won Shiva’s boon of divinity and immortality, his court of yakshas and yakshinis attended by Riddhi and Siddhi, and comparisons of his might to Parashurama, Hanuman, Bhima, Prahlad, Garuda, and Shesha. The composition’s name follows the “chalisa” convention associated with the number forty, though the verified text here runs to forty-four chaupai couplets framed by four dohas, forty-eight verses in total — a divergence from the genre’s namesake that is common enough among chalisas not tied to a single fixed historical text.

How it is recited

The Kuber Chalisa is recited especially around Dhanteras and Diwali, when Kuber is worshipped alongside Lakshmi as part of the festival’s wealth-focused rites, and more broadly whenever a devotee undertakes wealth sadhana — before starting a new business, during a stretch of financial hardship, or when seeking relief from debt. As with other chalisas, it is typically read aloud from a printed or memorized text in front of a lit lamp, rather than counted on a mala the way a short mantra would be.
