What is a mala?

A plain-language explanation of the japa mala — the 108-bead string used to count mantra and naam repetitions across Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain practice.

A mala is a string of beads — traditionally 108 of them — used to keep count while chanting a name or mantra. Each bead marks one repetition; a hand rolls from bead to bead until the full string has passed through the fingers. It's a simple, durable answer to something every counted practice runs into: how do you keep track without breaking your attention to hold the count in your head?

The count

108 is the traditional length of a mala, and 108 repetitions is the standard convention for one round of japa — used broadly across mantras and naams, not a rule tied to any single one of them. A longer session is usually measured in rounds: two rounds is 216 repetitions, and so on.

The guru bead

One bead — usually larger, or set apart from the rest — marks where the string begins and ends. Reaching it means a full round of 108 is complete.

Not one tradition's practice

Counting on a mala isn't specific to a single faith. It's a daily anchor across Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain practice — the name or mantra recited differs by tradition and by practitioner, but the mala itself, and the discipline of counting, carries across all four.

Counting it without the beads

Not everyone counts on a physical mala, and JaapDaily doesn't ask you to choose. If you're chanting with beads, a finger tally counter, or no aid at all, you can log the count afterward — open the app, enter the number, and your daily total, mala progress, and streak update as if you'd tapped each repetition yourself. You can backfill up to 30 days if you forgot to log a session. And if 108 isn't your round — practices vary — the app's mala size isn't locked at 108; you can set your own.
