Frequently asked questions
Is Jaap Daily really free?
Yes. Everyone gets every feature, on every platform. No subscription, no premium, no ads. Donations are optional and one-time.
Do I need an account?
No. You can use the entire app anonymously and everything stays on your device. Sign-in is only there if you want to back up your practice or sync between devices. We support phone, email, Google, and Apple sign-in.
Do you collect any data about me?
Yes, minimally. We use Firebase for optional sign-in and for basic app analytics — crash reports, which features are used, what versions we should support. We do not sell data, do not share it with advertisers, and do not use it for marketing. The app itself contains no ads, ever. Read the full breakdown on our Privacy Policy.
What is cloud sync and how does it work?
Cloud sync keeps your sessions, streaks, custom naams, and settings in sync across all your devices where you are signed in. It uses Firebase (a Google cloud service) and your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Sync is opt-in — it only activates when you create an account. If you sign out on a device, that device stops syncing but keeps its local copy. Deleting your account removes all synced data from our servers.
Which sign-in methods are supported?
Phone number (OTP), email and password, Google Sign-In, and Sign in with Apple. All four are available on both iPhone and Android.
Where does my data live?
By default, on your device. The app works fully without any account. If you sign in (phone, email, Google, or Apple), your data syncs to our secure Firebase backend so you can recover or use it on another device. You can stop syncing or delete your synced data anytime from Settings.
Separately, you can enable device-level backups — iCloud on iPhone, Google Drive on Android — so your practice data rides along with your phone's own backup. Those backups stay in your iCloud or Drive storage, outside our servers and under your control.
Will my data be shared?
No. There's no analytics SDK transmitting your activity. There's no leaderboard. There's no ad network. Your jap is yours. If you're signed in, your practice data is stored in Firebase and readable only by your account — we do not read it, sell it, or use it for any purpose other than syncing it back to your devices.
Sign-in is optional — why?
Because accounts create surfaces — for breaches, for tracking, for friction. A daily devotional app should be a quiet tool. Anonymous mode remains the default and always will be. Sign-in exists only for people who genuinely want their practice history to follow them across devices. If that's not you, you'll never be asked to sign in.
Does it work offline?
Entirely. Counter, history, insights, watch sync — all local. For signed-in users, sessions recorded offline queue and sync to Firebase when you reconnect. You never lose a count, even without internet.
What's an Anushthan?
A vow to repeat a mantra a fixed number of times — often 1.25 lakh, 11 lakh, or 11 crore. The dual-counter mode in Jaap Daily lets you track a naam and a mantra in parallel without losing your place in either.
Can I add a custom naam?
Yes. The plus icon in the naam picker opens a free text field. Type the naam in any script — Devanagari, Tamil, Bengali, Roman transliteration, anything. It's stored exactly as you typed it and never touched by translation logic.
How does the streak work? Will travel break it?
The streak counts every calendar day you hit your daily goal in your local time. We use calendar-day arithmetic, not 24-hour math, so daylight-saving and timezone changes don't silently shorten your streak. (This is a real bug we fixed in V1 — many japa apps still have it.)
Can I add jap counts I did offline, like on a mechanical counter or mala?
Yes. Open the app, tap the "+" icon on the counter screen, enter your count, and save. Your daily total, lifetime total, mala progress, and streak all update as if you had tapped each jap individually. If you use Anushthan mode (naam + mantra together), you can log both counts in one entry. From the History tab, you can also backfill sessions for past days up to 30 days ago — if you forgot to log yesterday, your streak will repair itself when you backfill the missing day.
Can I count without looking at the screen?
Yes. Enable "Volume button counting" in Settings → Counting. Volume Up counts each jap; Volume Down undoes the last one. Works with the screen off, the phone face-down, or in a pocket — useful for walking japa or eyes-closed meditation. Available on both iPhone and Android. Off by default; you opt in.
One detail worth noting: JaapDaily counts at every volume level, including when the volume is already at maximum or minimum — many apps stop registering presses at the extremes.
Can I move the bead ring to a different position on screen?
Yes. Go to Settings → Counter and enable "Drag mode." While Drag mode is on, press and drag the bead ring to any position — it stays within the screen edges. Your position is saved automatically and restored every time you open the app. Use "Reset position" to re-centre the ring.
Note: Drag mode is unavailable in Anushthan (dual-counter) mode — the split layout uses both halves of the screen, leaving no room to reposition either ring.
What happens on Apple Watch when my phone is off?
The watch keeps counting locally. When the phone reconnects, the counts merge into the day's total.
Is there a Wear OS version for Android?
Yes — JaapDaily launches with a Wear OS companion app for Android watches, alongside the Apple Watch app. Count from either wrist.
What's the donation for?
Hosting, App Store fees, design work, and the developer's tea. Donations are non-refundable and not tax-deductible. The supporter badge in the app is just a thank-you — no features are locked behind it.
I donated and the badge isn't showing. Help?
On iOS: Settings → Donations → Restore Purchases. On Android: same. If it still doesn't appear, write to support@jaapdaily.com with your purchase receipt.
What languages are supported?
Twenty: English, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Urdu, Sanskrit (Roman), Japanese, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Indonesian. The naam text itself is never translated — only the app interface.
Can I use my own wallpaper?
Yes. Jaap Daily lets you set one custom wallpaper from your photo library — it shows in Focus mode during your sitting. Go to Settings → Select Wallpaper → Choose from Library. We are also adding more curated deity wallpapers in upcoming app updates, free for all users.
How do I delete my data?
If you use the app anonymously: uninstall the app — this removes all on-device data. Then email support@jaapdaily.com if you want any remote analytics data deleted.
If you have an account: go to Settings → Account → Delete Account first — this permanently removes your account and all synced data from our servers. Then uninstall the app.

Wait — does this website use trackers? I thought you were privacy-first.
Yes, with consent. The marketing site (jaapdaily.com) uses Google Analytics and Meta Pixel to learn which pages help people and which ads work. Both are off by default; the cookie banner asks before either runs. The app itself ships zero analytics — that's the part that matters. We hold a clear line: trackers are fine on a marketing page where you're shopping, not fine inside a tool you use to sit with a mantra.
